A useful bass plugin should make the first idea playable quickly and leave enough control to refine every note. Here is a straightforward Mac workflow using SL Bass.
Hear the idea first.
Start from one of the 146 factory presets. Try a few notes from a MIDI keyboard before editing curves. If the sound sits well with the drums, keep it; if it does not, use Random for a new starting point or change the preset.
Choose the role.
For a sub part, begin with a sustained preset and a simple rhythm that leaves space for the kick. For a more percussive part, start with a short plucked sound. Compare it inside the actual track rather than judging the preset alone.
Record a few notes.
Play through your MIDI controller or the on-screen keyboard. SL Bass reflects incoming MIDI notes on the visible keys, so you can follow your performance while changing sounds. Keep the phrase short enough to repeat and compare.
Edit each note.
Use the pitch curve to control how the note moves, then the amplitude curve to control its level over time. Small edits are easier to judge when you loop the bass with the drums. Return to the original curve if a change makes the groove less clear.
Set mono and glide.
Mono helps keep a single bass voice in focus. Legato and glide can connect notes when the phrase needs a smoother transition. Switch them on only where the musical line benefits; the same preset may feel quite different with and without glide.
Check the track, then the plugin.
Listen with the kick, compare the bass at normal playback level and check whether the notes remain distinct. Presets and curves are starting points; the arrangement and rhythm decide whether the low end works.
